I love fall! I’m always very excited to decorate our house with the warm autumn colors each year. In the spirit of harvest and Thanksgiving, I want to use every opportunity I can for us to focus on our thankfulness. What better time to reflect on that then when we sit together to eat a meal. With this Chalkboard Fabric Table Runner we can each take a turn writing and talking about what we are thankful for each day.
This is a easy project and great for any skill level. Experience, perfection and preciseness are not required to whip up this fun little table runner.
Chalkboard Fabric Table Runner
Supplies:
- 1 1/2 yards of Chalkboard Fabric
- 1 1/2 yards of Burlap
- Basic Sewing supplies
- Paint and other trim to decorate it further (optional)
To Make:
Cut your chalkboard fabric into one 9″ x 49″ piece and the burlap into two – 3″ x 49″, two – 3″ x 13″ and one – 13″ x 52″
Once you have all of your pieces cut, sew your long burlap strips to each of the chalkboard fabric’s long sides. Then, sew your short pieces to the end.
Lay your chalkboard fabric with boards face side up and lay the 13″ x 52″ burlap piece on top. Using 1/2″ seam allowance, sew along three sides leaving one short side open for turning.
Turn your table runner right side out, press edges (be careful of the chalkboard fabric while ironing) and fold under your raw edge. Finish by topstitching around all sides, this will enclose your open end.
Your table runner is finished! Unless you are feeling extra crafty and want to add trim or use a stencil to paint a design on your burlap.
I actually made this tablerunner years ago, and each year we look forward to pulling it out. This year when I pulled it out I realize it would be perfect for our homeschool day. Often I need to be able to write something on a chalkboard, but am unable to since we just use the dining room table for our lessons. Having this little chalkboard in front of us makes it so much easier to explain a problem as we work on our school work. I think this tablerunner will be a permanent fixture on our table, and it’s usefulness makes it one of my favorite projects.

Not thought of this, very creative table runner. Can write any message we choose, like Merry Christmas for Christmas day.
