The other day I was talking to Derrick about a recipe I was going to post and he replied, “Not another cream of chicken soup recipe?” He said he was tired of cream of something, Bisquick, onion soup mix and stuffing recipes. He explained that we do so many things that are homemade to better our family, but are we missing one of the biggest aspects, our food? Of course, that got me thinking. I cook every night, but was I cheating our family by using these pantry items that have become household staple? Is it even possible to find enough recipes to cook differently on a day to day basis? Would they be budget friendly?
As I thought these things over for the next few days I wondered if anyone else felt this way. I mean these kind of recipes are so common because that is what people want, right? If I posted about home cooking without using these things, would people instantly be turned off?Well, the next day I got my answer while reading the comments on a blog I follow. One comment stated that she was tired of recipes requiring cream of something soup and Bisquick she couldn’t get those things in her area. Could they please post more “from scratch” recipes? So, someone else notices that there are an abundance of recipes using these items.
So this is where the “Cooking From Scratch Challenge” starts. I believe recipes are out there that don’t require convenience items. It might take some digging but I will find them . I will, one recipe at a time, change the way I cook for my family and of course do it while on a budget.
I hope that others will join me in this challenge. Every Tuesday I’ll be posting a “made from scratch recipe” Please don’t be intimidated by the words “from scratch.”
