There are several ways to quilt a project. I am fairly new to quilting, so I am still learning a lot about each method. I have done little projects using both hand and machine quilting, but this was the first time I have tied a quilt. Hand tying isn’t a first choice for many quilters, but for this baby blanket I think it turned out really cute.
I found this great video from The Crafty Gemini and that was all the lesson I needed. Below are the steps to hand tying a quilt.
Yarn, Perle cotton or even embroidery thread can be used to hand tie a quilt. I had some very fine crochet yarn left over from another project that I used. It was very easy to thread my tapestry needle with it, too, which made my life a little easier.
Read your batting instructions (located on the back of the package) to determine how many inches apart your knots need to be. For this small quilt it will work for me to put a knot at every block intersection. Oh, a side note about batting… The fluffy/ lofty batting works great with this type of quilting.
Decide which way you want your knots to go and do it the same way all over the quilt to keep it looking neat. ( I realized that at the end of my quilting. Oops!)
When you run your needle through make sure to go through all three layers. Pull your thread through, leaving about a three inch tail.
Come back around with your needle and go through right next to where you first went in, but not the exact hole (it will stretch it out to much if you go in the same hole). This will make your knot very secure, especially good if your quilt is for a little one.
I saw this done at a Project Linus Blanket Day. They just keep their thread running, continuing to do the first two steps until they ran out of thread. Then, they went back, cut their threads, tied and trimmed the ends.
Whenever you decide to cut, you will take your threads and tie them in a square knot.
Trim your thread down to the desired length. I prefer about an inch.
That’s it. It came together pretty quickly, huh?
Like I said this is just one way to quilt your project. I will be sharing a hand quilting project with you next. I think that is my favorite type of quilting. Plus, I just got an amazing deal on a floor quilting stand and can’t wait to try it out.
