Most of you know that we took the big plunge a couple months ago and bought our first home. It was a very busy time filled with a range of emotions. We kind of expected it to be that way, but the thing that did catch me off guard was that it took a little while for our new house to feel like home.
Don’t get me wrong, I know without a doubt this house was for us — as soon as we walked in, we knew this is where we wanted our family to call home. It is also a very warm and inviting house, so that wasn’t the problem either.
For some reason it just took awhile for me, for it to feel like ours. There could be two reasons for this . . . One, the house we left was the house I grew up in and have lived in for the majority of my life. As much as that house drove me nuts and I was more than ready for this move, it is understandable to feel almost strange being somewhere else.
The second reason might be that being an older house, it very much had the presence of someone else. Everything from the design to the markings on the wall that tracked the height and age of the kids that lived there. These are very charming qualities, but it does make it feel a little strange.
As the boxes were unpacked and things were fixed it began to feel a little more like we were settling into a place that was truly ours. I found that it was the little additions that aided in making this house seem a little more home like, two of which were a book shelf and a pantry from Sauder Woodworking Co.
We had both a built in pantry and bookshelf at the old house, so we were really in need of a place to put that stuff. It turned out adding two pieces of furniture helped us add our touch to the house, and we didn’t feel like we had lost any features we had from the previous place.
I bought both the pantry and bookshelf online from Sauder, of course, I already knew what pieces I was in need of while shopping. I was glad to see that had a great selection of styles and colors. It was really easy to find something that matched what we had in mind. The had something in every price range which was very helpful since we had just bought a house. It made finding what we needed affordable and easy. The perfect addition to our home was this pantry which was in the Carolina Oak Finish and 5- Shelf Bookshelf from the Carolina Estate Collection. I bet you can see a theme here.
I thought that it was really neat that you could find inspiration from their Expedition Design feature and there was even a quiz you could take to find your furniture style. Both things would be super helpful in decorating and re-doing a current living space.
Putting the furniture together was very easy, especially if your husband is really the one doing it and you are the one assisting (taking pictures, getting in the way, etc.) The directions were very clear and it really took no time to put together, which was very helpful in the pantry, since I was storing our food in boxes in the middle of the kitchen at the time.
It was a big relief when I could finally unpack those last few kitchen boxes and fill our new pantry. Everything fit well and the pantry was a nice addition to our little country kitchen.
The bookshelves were our second project. We are lucky to have a big, open hallway, so it was the perfect place to add a bookshelf to provide storage and display some of our pictures. Both functions made our little place feel more like home.

You picked out some nice pieces. I’m sure it was hard to move from your old house. I’m glad the new one is coming together. I agree that it’s so much easier to put stuff together when your husband is actually doing the building. Yay!
