I don’t know about you, but when I am sick, there are only certain foods that sound good to me. OK, it’s really just one food… potatoes, in any form. I don’t know why, it is just all I ever want. I can remember my dad bringing home potato wedges from KFC when I was a kid even.
My husband doesn’t quite understand my starchy cravings, his favorite food when he isn’t feeling well is applesauce. And as you may know he just had surgery which called for this house to be stocked with a ridiculous amount.
Because I knew he loved it so much I have been looking for a good applesauce recipe for a while. The problem is I keep running into recipes that had a lot of what I would call unneeded ingredients, for example cinnamon. I know that wonderful spiced applesauce is good around the holidays, but I need an everyday applesauce.
Thankfully, I have been a long time follower of Amiyrah @ 4 Hats and Frugal. She saved the day when she posted about her 2 ingredient slow cooker applesauce. After reading her article I realized it wasn’t really a recipe that I was missing. It was a METHOD.
Before I tell you how to do this I need you to trust me. I have made this 3 times in the last month, and it works!
To make amazing applesauce all you need is apples and 2tablespoons of water.
I told you, you are going to have to trust me.
To Make:
Peel, core and roughly chop enough apples to fill your slow cooker. Add 2 Tablespoons of water, stirring the apples around to coat. Cook for 4 hours. Mash the apples with a fork, potato masher, or pastry cutter. It wont take much to break the apples up.
You may be wondering, why does this work?
You are roasting the apples. Which in return brings out all their natural flavors and sweetness. The little bit of water gets everything started, and the slow cooking does the rest. Start with apples that you enjoy eating and you can’t go wrong. (We have used Arkansas Black and Empire apples.)
There you have it. A good for you, cheap and easy recipe.
Is there a special comfort food you keep on hand for these occasions or is it just us?

When I’m feeling sick I like to eat soup, potato, export soda crackers, jello, apple sauce and drink sprite… I don’t know why! haha but I like apple sauce so much that I could eat it everyday (just like pizza) ๐

I love making apple sauce in the slow cooker and canning it! Sometimes I will make it on the same evening that I am making pork chops, add a little brown sugar and bake the pork chops with the apple sauce right over it! Nothing better than homemade! Thank you for sharing!! ๐

Great idea, Jill. I think my husband would love that.

This was such a pleasant surprise to see! I was doing my weekly google check and saw your applesauce picture pop up. I’m so excited that the recipe worked for you! Feel free to pin my recipe all over the place and tell the Mundo! ;-D

Thank you, Amiyrah. I have been hesitant to pin with out knowing what you would think of that. I will get to pinning!
Amiyrah
Oh of course! I would never have a problem with you pinning my pin ๐

I love, love this recipe. I gave up sugar a long time ago and work really hard to keep it out of my little boy’s diet. Slow cooking the apples would indeed bring out the sweetness. Thanks for the post.

I am sure it is hard to stay away from it, I struggle with sugar myself. Thankfully this recipe doesn’t need it at all. It’s definitely one of our families favorite.

About the Homemade Applesauce–does it matter if it’s cooked on Low or High in slow cooker, as long as it cooks for the 4 hrs.? Thank you very much for your help.
brenna
Slow and Low is the best, but my husband has been guilty of turning it to high at first to speed things up, then letting it finish on low.
