What crafter doesn’t have scraps? It just happens and most of us feel too bad to get rid of what is now scraps from precious yardage. Most of the time these pieces go in a box or bag, that we say we will do something with eventually. Well, I am telling you it is time to dig them out. The scrappier they look, the better.
There are so many possibilities for this garland. You could use all different colors of scraps or match them to whatever theme you have. In the spirit of Christmas (in July) I chose red and green pieces to use for my garland.
If you saw the fabric laid out you would never think it would look good together, but somehow it works. So, this is the perfect time to use any of that “what was I thinking” fabric you might have collected. Even ugly fabric looks good on this project.
What you need:
- Fabric Scraps
- Christmas lights
- Pinking Shears
To Make:
- Cut fabric pieces with pinking shears (this will keep it from fraying.) You will need pieces anywhere from 3/4 in to 1 1/2 in wide and 6 in to 7 in long.
- Optional: I folded my string of light is half, for one I didn’t need garland that long and second I liked the extra thickness of the lights being doubled.
- Tie the scraps onto the garland, alternating colors or whatever pattern you desire.
There were a few times while doing this garland I was unsure if I liked it or not, but the more strips I added the more I loved it. I’m glad I stuck with it, because I think it turned out very nice. Not bad for a project that didn’t cost me a thing.
We still have handmade gift ideas and my favorite Christmas brunch recipes still to come this months. So, be sure to stop back by for more…

I LOVE this. I am so craft illiterate – but even I can do this. Awesome. Thanks for the idea!

It is adorable. I love homemade decorations over store bought. I am a minimalist and have few decorations but will make this garland!

It looks great! Also the perfect idea for fabric scraps.

SO cute! I think I should make this now, when I actually have money, as opposed to when Christmas time comes and we have none! haha

Brenna, this is genius! Love the look, love the fabric, love that you doubled the lights {lights spread too thin are no bueno!} Seriously love this project.
