I started by finding some Christmas shapes online, and tracing them in the Silhouette software. From there I mirrored the shape so that I would have the front and back pieces for my ornament.
I decided to try out my Portrait on fabric cutting, and I had a stash of Christmas fat quarters that I knew would be perfect for this project. I switched out my regular blade with the fabric blade, and ironed the sewable fabric interfacing to the wrong side. I loved the interfacing. It cut very well and was lightweight but added just enough durability. It was only slightly tacky, which perfectly held my pieces together while hand sewing.
After the shapes were cut I placed the wrong sides together. I hand to sew around the edges leaving about an inch and half open to fill my shape. {For a little extra charm add something with a Christmas scent inside.}
I didn’t disconnect my thread, so it was easy just to pick up where I left off and finish stitching around my shape. Then I just secured the end and attached a little thread at top for hanging.

Oh! What fun little ornaments! I love the fact that the silhouette can cut fabric, it makes projects like this super doable! I certainly would have a time and a half of trying to hand cut those shapes. 🙂

Me too, my husband said, “Couldn’t you have just cut them by hand?” No way, I could have cut them even and had two of the same shape for the front and the back. Plus it is just easier using the Silhouette.
Glenna Anderson
Lovely ornaments. It’s so great that you cut these with the silhouette.
Bev

Lauren @ The Thinking Closet
I remember the first time I cut fabric with my Silhouette, I thought, “No way is this going to work as easily as other mediums.” And lo and behold it did! Without a problem! This tutorial is a wonderful reminder for me to try out fabric cutting again. And your ornaments are super cute. I love the hand-stitching around the edges and the fact you added some fragrant stuffing. So smart!
And thanks for participating in our Challenge & Giveaway! You helped make it a huge success!
