Transitioning a first aid kit to more natural alternatives is easy with these recipes from Simply Earth and their June Essential Oil Recipe Box containing all the ingredients you need to make the switch!
Since I started Incorporating Essential Oils into Daily Life, anytime we need something around our house I’m looking for a recipe to make it myself instead of purchasing something from the store. It’s pretty empowering and as someone who enjoys creating it is a lot of fun.
The Need for an Alternative First Aid Kit
With summer time here the kids are loving their outside life, which translates to a fair share of bumps and boo-boos. This has me very focused on finding safe products to treat their aches and pains.
As I mentioned in my Facebook group, when I did the unboxing, how to treat those minor scrapes, bug bits and booboos has always been hard for me. I’m hesitant to reach for something from the medicine cabinet, and so for minor things I usually don’t do anything. I always worry that to my kids this looks like I don’t care, because I’m not attempting to fix it other then a kiss.
The truth is I want to fix it, I want to do something to help. I’m just extremely cautious about what I put on my kids skin and in their body. If I’m unsure about a product, I usually play it safe and don’t use it.
As I have been expanding my knowledge of essential oils, I have been searching for non- toxic, safer options for all of our needs. Unfortunately, transitioning a first aid kit to more natural alternatives doesn’t cross my mind until the booboo has already happened. Which means there is a good chance I don’t have what I need, or it isn’t in a form that can be used.
Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box: Oily Aid Kit
Thankfully, Simply Earth has made it easy to step by step make the switch to safer, non- toxic products for my kids and home. What perfect timing that this month’s box (June 2020) was an Oily Aid kit! Containing 4 full size essential oils, 6 recipes (developed and tested by aromatherapist) and the additional supplies to make products geared towards minor aches and pains .
If we were talking in person, this is about the time my sisters would tell me to stop yelling because as my excitement rises so does my voice apparently. But, really I get so excited about once again being able to make my own products (making it more affordable) with essential oils (safer alternative) for my family and home.
Timber Essential Oil Blend
This month’s box had a second highlight, the new Timber Essential Oil Blend. This blend has a more “manly” woodsy vanilla aroma, which gives me the chance to finally make things for my husband! I can’t tell you how many times I have tried to buy my husband beard oil for example, only for him to tell me he hated the smell. So, I held my breath that this might be a good option for him and spoiler alert… he said “ya, this isn’t too bad!” Which opens the door to being able to make even more products for him and our home.
What products came in the Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box Oily Aid Kit?

I also used these products that came free with my first month’s subscription to Simply Earth’s Essential Oil Recipe Box…

- Beeswax

- 10 ml Roll- on Bottle
- 5 ml Amber Glass Bottle
The Oily Aid Recipes
Calendula Solar Infused Oil
Solar infused oils have been used for decades and is a time tested method for making beneficial products. This oil can be used for burns, slow- healing wounds, insect bites and can also be used as the carrier oil in other recipes, like the Burn Salve, to add even more benefits to your creations.
This recipe used:
- Dried Calendula Flowers
- Any carrier oil- I used a combination of olive oil, grape seed oil and almond oil because I didn’t want to deplete any one oil and it’s just what I had.
- Cheesecloth or find mesh sieve
- 6- 8 ounce clear, airtight jar
This recipe was easy to put together. But, it does need to sit in the sun for a few weeks, so don’t wait to long to get this started. I also took an empty almond oil bottle, pealed the label off and plan to use that for the final storage container for this oil. I figured it would help when I was trying to dispense just a little bit, and well, I just felt super thrifty using something I might have thrown away.
Digest Help Roll On
This blend was specifically created to help with on- the- go digestion support, soothing nausea and upset stomach and has a calming and stress relieving effect. One of the uses mentioned for this roll on was for car sickness. As an adult who still gets queasy in the front seat anytime I try to look away from the road, I’m very excited to use this.
This recipe used:
- Cardamom Essential Oil
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 10 ml Roll-on Bottle
To use this roll on you apply it to pulse points and the abdomen to soothe nausea and upset digestive system. Like I said I’m excited to have this resource for myself, but especially for my kids. How many times do you hear your kids say they have a stomach ache? In this house it is pretty often and it’s something up until now I have only been able to help by saying, “I’m sorry, honey.” Not quite healing power, I know. I’m glad that next time I hear of tummy troubles, I will have a way to help.
Skin Healing Gel
Soothe bumps and booboos, while supporting the natural healing process!
This recipe used:
- Aloe Vera Gel
- Bumps & Booboos Essential Oil Blend
- Fractionated Coconut Oil
This was the first of the recipes I made. I knew there was a good chance it would be needed soon, and it was very quick to make. All I had to do was mix a few things into the aloe vera container and it was done. I love that the container that the aloe came in was also it’s final storage container. All I had to do was take off the aloe label and add the new one for my new creation.
Even though I made it with the kids frequent boo-boos in mind, I actually ended up using it right away on myself. I had just gotten stung by a bee on my finger and my whole hand was pretty swollen. I applied the gel on my aching hand, and it definitely brought me some relief very quickly.
Sleek & Smooth Shaving Butter
Shaving Butter might not seem like a first aid need, but it can definitely be beneficial in soothing skin irritations do to shaving. Plus, using it after shaving will moisturize skin as well as prevent acne and ingrown hairs.
This recipe used:
- Solid Coconut Oil
- Fractionated Coconut Oil
- Timber Essential Oil Blend
Using the new Timber Blend in this recipe makes it a perfect Father’s Day gift! If the man in your life doesn’t shave this can also be used to make a great beard cream!
When I mixed up this recipe there was a little left over in the bowl that I couldn’t get out. I saved it and I used it after shaving my legs. The scent was definitely something I would l consider more manly, but it made my legs feel so nice and soft. I will be making another version of this shaving butter for myself. Maybe I’ll use some sort of combination of the oils from last months box for a more feminine scent.
By the way an empty coconut oil container makes the perfect way to store your shave butter. I’m on a thrifty roll!
Burn Salve
Whether it’s sunburn or a occupational hazard of making supper, this recipe with bring soothing relief.
This recipe uses:
- Beeswax
- Fractionated Coconut Oil
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Bumps & Booboos Essential Oil Blend
- Small Sealable Container
Unfortunately, burns do happen. As much as I try to keep us all safe in the kitchen and outside, there is only so much that can be done and accidents do happen. I’m so glad I will now have something that can soothe and help in the healing process.
This recipe was also quick to put together. I put it in a jelly size mason jar that I had, but that is a little too deep. I think I will either find a smaller jar next time or even better yet use the next empty Aloe Vera container that I have.
No Stress Blend
The name of this recipe says it all and it is the perfect aid for any grownup or parents. All of the oils in this blend having a calming effect and the use of Timber in this blend makes it’s aroma a little softer and more welcomed by men and woman.
This recipe used:
- Cardamon Essential Oil
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Timber Essential Oil Blend
I actually have this diffusing right now as I write this, and as you can imagine I made a full batch of this recipe. One thing I did realize when putting this blend in my amber glass bottle is that if you tighten the lid very hard till you hear a snap it will form a kind of seal. This is great if you are giving it as a gift, but it also inserts that special piece in place that helps you to control the flow of the oil. That might be well known knowledge. But, as a newbie it took me two times using those bottles to figure it out, and I was pretty excited when I did.
What Do I think About My New Oily Aid?
Did I say I was making this stuff for my kids? Well by the time I could finish writing this I have used all of the products but one on myself! Who knew I was were they got their clumsiness from (OK everyone knew) and that I was in more need of it then them.
After trying all of these recipes out I have to say that I am so pleased with the soothing power they bring, and the confidence that I have knowing these recipes are safe for me and my family.
I love that this box helped me in transitioning my first aid kit to more natural alternatives, and I now have 4 more essential oils to help me make these recipes again and others.

After having a bout with pulmonary embolism (with no real answers as to why!), I have been getting into natural healing. Yoga was first and essential oils and healing crystals have been slowly introduced! Thanks for introducing me to even more products and uses!
